Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows the events of Ghostbusters 2, set 32 years afterward. Afterlife is a thrilling, intriguing ride that won’t scare kids too much while letting them feel like they watched an adult movie.
Afterlife is directed by Jason Reitman, the director of Ghostbusters 2 and the soon-to-be-released Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. (2024) Somtimes in these kinds of movies, you genuinely just want to see ghosts trash the city. While Afterlife delivers this, it also gives us some character depth and humor.
I recently watched this to prepare for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. (You’ll see my review for that soon!) I walked in with a very low bar set, and I came out surprised! The actors are on point, especially Finn Wolfhard. The thing I felt was lacking was a big climax. I expected a big finish, and was slightly dissapointed.
Age Rating: 11 and Up
Action: 2.6 out of 5
Ghosts wreak havoc, slightly scary images, two people are possessed, though not in an overly creepy way. The probably scariest scene is where a person is serving a customer at a gas station, and they turn around and see it is a zombie. That is the only over-the-top scene, in my opinion.
Sexual Content: 2.3 out of 5
Sexual jokes, including the word virginity (the word is not explained or dwelt on) and a slightly implied reference to sex, though most kids would not catch it.
Language: 2.0 out of 5
Use of the A word, Gods name in vain, D word, S word.
